Herman Hertzberger Shaping Freedom: Architecture 1959-2025

オランダの建築家ヘルマン・ヘルツベルガー（1932年アムステルダム生まれ）は建築を「単独のオブジェクト」ではなく、社会的・都市的・文化的文脈の中で相互に関係し合う「結び目」として捉えます。本書では、彼の思想が写真・図面・エッセイ・他者の作品との対話などを通じて紹介されています。

この書籍は、おそらく私にとって最後の一冊になるだろう。建築における私のキャリアの締めくくりでありながら、これまでの書籍と同様に、明確な終止符ではなく開かれたかたちでまとめられている。初期の著作『Lessons for Students in Architecture』の延長線上に位置づけられ、私自身の建築と設計に対する視点の集大成でもある。
1960年代、CIAMから分裂したTeam Tenは、戦後の都市開発における貧しい成果に対する批判を表明した。たとえばAldo van Eyckは、「稀に見る好機が与えられながら、職能がこれほどまでに失敗したことはない」と嘆いた。
さらに、世界的に人間が「一面的」に扱われていることへの警鐘が鳴らされ、消費主義と自由市場経済の台頭によって、こうした懸念は現実のものとなった。
今日、我々は再び住宅危機に直面している。建築が利益を生む手段としてのみ扱われ、建築家が「セットデザイナー」のような立場に押し込まれる状況では、共同生活の最低限の条件すら顧みられることはない。
それでも、1960年代と同様に、建築学生や若い建築家たちの情熱は希望の光となる。本書の考察は、そうした新しい世代に向けて、空間に対する基本的な価値を見直す責任意識を喚起することを目的としている。
