AAスクールの校長だったアルヴィン・ボヤースキーが1981年創刊以来、約40年75号を発行した「AA Files」。その歴史を4人の歴代編集者が振り返ります。
This issue of AA Files, the long-running house journal of the Architectural Association, revisits 75 issues of writing and publishing under four successive editors: Mary Wall, Mark Rappolt, David Terrien and Thomas Weaver. After nearly four decades of virtually uninterrupted publishing X signals a pause to reflect on what has been until now an ongoing and evolving project on the history and discourse of architecture.
Thirty-two pieces have been republished here in facsimile, spliced together to give a portrait of the magazine’s life, reflecting its seminal discoveries, thematic spectrum and formal explorations, Taken as one, they reveal the capacity of AA Files as a platform for a diverse range of contributors, from the established to the lesser known, for whom the journal became a debut. AA Chairman Alvin Boyarsky founded AA Files in 1981 with Mary Wall as editor to challenge the AA’s Previous house periodicals including AA Notes AA Journal and AA Quarterly. Initially conceived to provide a ‘panoramic view of the life of the school’, over 75 issues AA Files established itself decidedly in an international context, extending beyond Bedford Square and the continent, towards its position today – out of all the AA’s cultural production it has consistently engaged the widest audience. The issues form a continuum of architectural enquiry and writing that fosters a long-lasting relationship with its constellation of reader and contributors. From its beginnings with Mary Wall (issues 1- 40) at the helm, the journal captures the vitality of theoretical positions in the making with established voices juxtaposed against the archetypal architectural report on built projects and exhibition reviews.
With successive editors Mark Rappolt(issues 41- 49)and David Terrien(issues 50-54), the thematic direction Shifted to art and literature, best exemplified in the double issue 45/46 with a focus on Oulipian writer Georges Perec. From the second issue art director Dennis Bailey(Later with his wife Nicola Bailey, who Succeeded him)established the format of the magazine, its distinctive nameplate and full-bleed cover images.
The journal’s most recent editior Thomas Weaver(issues 55-75) arguably took the most radical and influential turn, using both essay and conversation to challenge today’s conventional and often impenetrable academic mode of writing to instead champion a more literary and stylistic approach – one that sees architecture no as a fragment isolated by its own history but as a field continuously shaped by art, culture, Politics and life itself. With 10000 word articles that preference the object8buildings, drawings, even biography), concise yet evocative titles, lavish illustrations and surprise fold-outs, pop-ups and inserts, all elegantly contained in a design by John Morgan studio, the magazine became an architectural object in its own right. While the masthead, design and content have evolved, there have been two constants to AA Files: one is the serif nameplate, first set by Dennis Bailey as Caslon 540(and later revised by John Morgan studio). Who edited the magazine for 29 years. Her work on AA Files is unequivocally one of the greatest contributions to architecture writing since the journal’s founding. For this issue, we have channeled the ethics of the collagist, remaining faithful to the original design of each text. It is hence an essue of for editors – Mary Wall, Mark Rappolt, David Terrienand Thomas Weaver – Whose large shoes are yet to be filled. Articles by their contributors, are arranged to follow the proximity and contrast in themes and positions, occasionally interrupted by Nigel Coates’ explosions on which the last issue ended.
X is a celebration of AA Files and its makers. It is as much a retrospective as it is a projection of a magazine to revived. We would like to thank all of the contributors who have been involved, for their engagement and support, Sarah Handelman for her incredible guidance and patience, and Boris Meister for his masterful craft and magic.
